Hawaii is a beautiful place full of blue skies, clear water, and jaw dropping sunsets 🌺 But even the most breathtaking places in the world aren’t immune to waste pollution.
Besides being known for Mai Tai’s, Luau’s, and beaches for miles, Hawaii is also known for being the home of Plastic Beach, which is considered to be one of the dirtiest places on earth!
Kamilo Beach, located on shores of the Big Island, isn’t exactly what you’d picture when you think of a beach day in Hawaii. Instead of having perfect sand and waves, most people are taken back by the mass amounts of plastic that has overtaken its beauty. 🥀
The beach is an accumulation zone for plastic trash that has made it to land from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is an enormous patch of plastic waste discovered in the 1980’s, is located in the Pacific between California & Hawaii. The patch size is unknown & estimations vary as some have related it to the size of Texas while others have compared it to the massive land of Russia.
The debris found on Plastic Beach consists of 90% plastic materials from both household products & fishing materials. There are also tiny pieces of plastic called Micro-plastics that end up absorbing toxic chemicals before they get eaten by the life in the sea. 🐠
Household products we use today may not be the only cause, but it is a leading cause! What can you do to reduce your contribution to the destruction of beautiful places like these?
We are SO excited that we got our hands on our first official Conscious Crates product today! 🌿 We can’t WAIT until we can finally share this with you!
We knew immediately that we intended to sample one for ourselves, so not only was it the anticipation of officially being able to say we owned our first products for our store that’s going to help us get closer to accomplishing our mission, but we were able to check another eco swap off of our own personal list! ✅
The funny thing was though, when we went to grab our sample to try, we found ourselves feeling a little scared. Our minds filled with what if scenarios like what if we don’t love it as much as our old non sustainable one? What if we revert back to our old comfort zones? What if we WANT to switch but aren’t ready to make the commitment? 🤯
Fear & comfort are important reasons why we as a society haven’t changed. It’s easier to do & use what we know versus something that we aren’t sure of because it’s out of the norm. We KNOW plastic. We live, eat, and breathe it in some cases. Its the same logic for cars, coal, deforestation, and more. It’s comfortable to use it because it appears that everyone already does despite what we know about it. I know there are plenty of people who were like us, people who wanted to do something for so long to make the world a better place but continued to go with the flow because it was more conveniently available & priced 👎🏼
Ignoring those fears, we took the plunge and used the new eco conscious version of that product anyway. We are happy to report that NONE of those fears came true and the switch was completely worth it! We LOVED the new version that we will be selling in our shop coming soon & had no problem giving our old version a final goodbye. We realized that even though for a split second, this small but important change seemed scary, but it turned out to be just fine in the end!
After feeling a little scared anyway, we decided that our Tuesday Tip to you is to take the plunge into the life you want to live, because you’re only one decision away from living a totally different life 🌱
Continue to check back for updates on our eco shop coming soon! We want to hear from YOU on what your first eco swap was & whether you still use that swap today!
🌱 If you are looks for some Monday inspiration on how to be more eco conscious, look no further! Here are 5 ways you can take a small step TODAY to start making the world a cleaner, abundant, and lasting place 🌱
🌿 Don’t use that paper towel! They are NOT recyclable and after breakdown in landfills, they release methane which is a potent greenhouse gas. Switch to a reusable towel or take a few minutes to let your hands air dry!
🌿 Recycle what you KNOW can be recycled in your at home bin! Most curbside pick ups do not include items like plastic bags, produce bags, food storage bags, and more. Watch for an upcoming Conscious article on how to tell what you can recycle and what you can’t!
🌿 Invest in a reusable utensil option for work, school, & eating on the go instead of using your plastic plates & eating utensils! Bring a set of dinnerware from home or invest in a reusable set to eliminate plastic waste. Conscious Crates shop coming soon will offer an alternative option, keep checking back!
🌿 Fill up a cup! Instead of grabbing a pack of water bottles to keep you hydrated, fill up a reusable jug and pour it into a glass cup, mason jar, or a reusable bottle instead!
🌿 Get on a walk & clean up some trash! We all know that we can go on a walk through out our neighborhood and find pieces of trash along the way. A wise man once said (Bill Nye) that in order to make the world a better place, sometimes you have to clean up other peoples trash!

If you’re anything like us, you probably think of a cute little panda eating a snack when you hear the word bamboo. What you probably don’t think about when you hear the word bamboo are all of the advantages that come with using bamboo for non-dietary purposes!
Let’s be real, big box stores where most people buy their products like Walmart, Target, Costco, etc… aren’t using bamboo as their main material when making their everyday household products. Instead, they are using plastics & non degradable materials which is contributing to the massive landfill & ocean pollution problem we have found ourselves in today.
As we laid out in our most recent Instagram post (catch up on our feed here), there’s a TON of plastic waste material flowing into our oceans…and when we say tons, we really mean 8 million tons. What’s worse is that 80% of said ocean pollution comes from onshore plastic waste from everyday people like many of us reading (and writing) this article.
But let’s be real again, nothing in this article that you have read thus far is “new” news. These aren’t groundbreaking revolutions or facts. Pollution has been evident for years however big box stores STILL have yet to make the eco switch…. or really even address it at all.
Plastic is used as a common material is making items like straws, cups, plates, food containers, coffee lids, and more. Most people might assume that these items using plastic are doing so because that is the only option we have, but bamboo is a more sustainable and eco conscious option.
Bamboo, a material that Conscious Crates intends to incorporate into their shop coming soon, is a 100% biodegrade and renewable resource that can be used for various different products! Bamboo based products can replace products like straws, cups, mugs, make up brushes, toothbrushes, and more that are usually made out of plastic. Not only do they help the environment and keep our water clean, the products also have a sturdier & more natural look to fit in with any type of home decor or color scheme you already have flowing in your home!
Switching one household item from plastic to eco friendly & sustainable is easy when you do it in stages! You don’t need to break your budget to go zero waste all at once but you can start now by making small steps.
On your next grocery trip, buy a couple reusable grocery bags instead of using the plastic at the store. Or maybe instead of buying your normal plastic container of detergent pods, opt in to buy an eco friendly brand like Planet Inc. that uses more friendly ingredients and biodegradable packaging.
Tell us below 👇🏼 what item you have already or plan on switching out for a more sustainable option!
